Fe-Ga magnetostrictive alloy single crystals are a key material for vibration power generation (energy harvesting) that powers IoT sensors, as well as for actuators and sensors. Using the Vertical Bridgman (VB) method, we grow high-quality single crystals with minimal variation in Ga concentration.
We can grow them as rectangular prisms up to 66 mm × 66 mm and cylinders up to φ52 mm. These crystals reach a high magnetostriction of about 300 ppm with very little variation, giving them excellent properties for vibration-power-harvesting devices.

Because our magnetostrictive materials enable consistent vibration energy harvesting, they are suitable for use as standalone power sources in maintenance-free wireless sensor networks. We aim to develop products that contribute to society through collaboration with device manufacturers and universities.
Sumitomo Metal Mining's Fe-Ga magnetostrictive alloy single crystals can be processed into various sizes and shapes, mainly sheet materials.
Sumitomo Metal Mining works with device manufacturers and universities to advance high-performance materials through open innovation.
| Magnetostriction Value (Parallel) | Alloy Composition | Shape |

Magnetostrictive vibration power generation offers many applications and potential uses. For example, the crystals can serve as an independent power supply for the following IoT systems:
In materials with magnetostrictive effects, magnetic moments align with the external magnetic field, causing slight changes in shape. The Fe-Ga magnetostrictive alloy single crystal is an iron-based magnetostrictive material that combines a strong magnetostrictive effect with high mechanical strength.
It is drawing attention for vibration power generation, and it also works in magnetostrictive sensors and actuators.
